Nana was created by Manuel de Falla
As a woman searches for the remains of her grandfather’s father and discovers the story of an idealistic young professor from Tarragona, buried memories of the Spanish Civil War are revealed. I was very lucky to discover this film on a Singapore Airlines flight!
He clashes with the local priest, a hard-line authoritarian, and later, as the Spanish Civil War approaches, is condemned to the new authoritarian government and Franco’s army
It tells the story of a handsome, progressive teacher, a follower of the little-known and rather revolutionary “Frienet Method”, who tries it out in a small rural school in rural Spain. Bad timing!
I found this film to be very moving and a wonderful testament to the humanity and spirit of this professor
He is beaten, displayed almost dead in front of his young students, then murdered, and his body is thrown away and never found. The film rediscovers his story through the attempts of the great-granddaughter of one of his students to find her great-grandfather’s grave in a mass grave.
Unfortunately, the “true story” book it is based on is not yet available in English
It deserves to be released more and shown in arthouse cinemas at least in the UK, Europe and where I live in Australia.
