Line of Events
Copenhagen 1919: A young worker is unemployed and pregnant. She meets Dagmar, who runs an illegal adoption agency. A strong connection is formed, but her world falls apart when she stumbles upon the shocking truth behind her work. The official entry of Denmark for the Best International Feature Film category of the 97th Academy Awards 2025. I liked the promise that society would be exposed as the real monster, and not the people destroyed by it. However, telling the story through a character who is a pure victim takes the film away from that goal. It’s not a social critique when all evil is concentrated in a single arch-villain, while everyone else is excused due to their good intentions. On the contrary, it should have been shown that in such a brutal context, villainy and compassion are not so easily distinguished. The tone was also a bit off – more melancholic than anything else – and left the viewer indifferent to what was happening on screen.
